Young boys keep warm outside the Baradari in the Qil’a of Mahmudabad after the arrival of the ‘Alams, or standards of battle which are displayed during Moharram. These flags, many of which are around 30 feet high, are run up the citadel's steps by single bearers before being propped up against the walls. These flag runners are often Hindus and they believe that carrying the flags will grant them a son in the future.
